The 94th General Convocation of the University of Kelaniya

The 94th General Convocation of the University of Kelaniya was successfully held on the 19th of September 2017 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).

The graduands of the following Degree Programmes were awarded certificates during the First Session; Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies – Doctor of Philosophy Degree, Master of Philosophy Degree, Master of Arts Degree, Master of Arts Degree (External), Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies, Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Ayurvedic Counselling, Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies (External). The graduands (External Candidates) of the Faculty of Social Sciences – Bachelor of Arts Degree Programme were also awarded certificates.

The convocation was presided over by Thripitaka Vagishvaracharya, Mahopadhyaya, Pandith, the most Venerable Welamitiyawe Dharmakirthi Sri Kusala Dhamma Thero, – the Chief Prelate of the Colombo and Chilaw regions and the Chancellor of University of Kelaniya. Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Deans of the Faculties, Directors of Postgraduate Institutes, Registrar, Directors of the Institutes, Heads of the Departments, the academic staff members of the university and parents were among the participants of this special ceremony in which about 900 graduates were awarded certificates.

The First International Conference of the Shalakya Tantra – ‘Shalakya Sandeepani – 2017’

The Inauguration Ceremony of the ‘Shalakya Sandeepani – 2017’, the First International Conference of the Shalakya Tantra organized by the Department of Salya Shalakya of the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute (GWAI-Yakkala), affiliated to the University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on the 15th of September 2017 at the Amaya Green Hotel,Yakkala. The scientific sessions were held on the 16th & 17th of September 2017 at GWAI, Yakkala. This Conference was organized with the objective of sharing the knowledge of recent advances in Shalakya Tantra among academics and physicians.

Prof. Vd. K.S. Dhiman, the Director General of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences in India (CCRAS, New Delhi) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. This conference was participated by Prof. Bimali Jayawardena, the Acting Vice Chancellor and the Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Kelaniya, Cadre Chair & Senior Prof. N.P. Sunil Chandra and other academic staff members of the University of Kelaniya, the academic staff members of the GWAI , Ms. M.D.M.D Karunathilake – Commissioner/Ayurveda of the Department of Ayurveda, Dr. S.D. Hapuarachchi- the Director of the Institute of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Colombo and its other academic staff members, Dr. Khema Hettiarachchi – the Director of the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurvedic Hospital including its Medical Officers, Dr. Kumari Kumarasirekara – the Director of the National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital at Borella including its Medical Officers, Dr. Swarna Kaluthota- the Acting Director of the Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute (BMARI) at Navinna including its Medical Officers, the Deputy Director of the National Institute for Traditional Medicine including its Medical Officers, many postgraduates and undergraduates.

People’s Bank (Yakkala Branch), the National Science Foundation (NSF), Pasyala Osu (Pvt) Ltd, Mega Pharma, Eco mind, Link Natural products. Institute, Fadna (Food and Nature Pvt. Ltd), Nugegoda Ayurveda Clinic and some other reputed institutions were among the main sponsors for the conference.

Inauguration Ceremony of the Higher Diploma in Business Programme –2017

The inauguration ceremony of the Higher Diploma in Business Programme – 2017 (IV Batch) conducted by the Department of Commerce and Financial Management (DCFM) of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS) was successfully held on the 17th of September 2017 at the Auditorium of the FCMS.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Indika Jayadewa, the Manager of the WNS & Global Services explained the importance of following the Higher Diploma in Business. The event was graced by Dr. P.N.D. Fernando, the Dean of the FCMS, Dr. S.M.Ajantha Samarakoon, the Head of the DCFM, Dr. H.A.K.N.S. Surangi, the Coordinator of the Diploma in Business Programme, academic and non-academic staff members of the DCFM and the New Diploma Students.

2nd International Conference on Christian Studies (ICCS) – 2017

The 2nd International Conference on Christian Studies (ICCS) – 2017 which was collaboratively organized by the Department of Western Classical Culture & Christian Culture of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya and National Christian Council (NCCSL), Sri Lanka was successfully held on the 15th of September 2017 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The conference was organized to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation (1517) and its main theme was “The Impact of Lutheran Reformation on the Church and Society”.

The chief guest of the event was the Prof. Bimali Jayawardena, Acting Vice Chancellor and the Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Kelaniya. The keynote speech on the topic of “The Socio Political Background of the Reformation and its Relevance for Today” was delivered by Rev. Dr. Einar Tjelle, the Assistant General Secretary, Council of International Relations, Church of Norway.

Cadre Chair & Senior Prof. N.P. Sunil Chandra, the Chairperson of the Research Council of the University, Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Senior Lecturer (Ms.) Esha Gamlath, the Head of the Department of Western Classical Culture & Christian Culture, Senior Lecturer (Mr.) P. Wijith Rohan Fernando of the Department of Western Classical Culture & Christian Culture, other academic and non-academic staff members of the Department of Western Classical Culture & Christian Culture, many undergraduates and many academics graced the event.
