“Vidya 2017” – Science Exhibition & Fair

The Faculty of Science of the University of Kelaniya, established in 1967, proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. While gaining the national and international reputation, it has emerged as a center of excellence in teaching and research in the state university system. The University of Kelaniya was one of the first universities to begin teaching science in Sinhala. At present, the Faculty of Science consists of eight departments, namely the Department of Botany, Chemistry, Industrial Management, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Statistics & Computer Science and Zoology & Environmental Management. The Faculty of Science offers Diplomas, BSc degree programmes, MSc degree programmes, MPhil and PhD programmes. In this journey of success, this year is a milestone, which should be celebrated. Therefore, the undergraduates, members of the staff and the distinguished alumni of the Faculty of Science have planned some activities to commemorate the 50 years of service. The main event of the series of such activities is the ‘Vidya 2017’ exhibition. The exhibition will be held at the premises of the Faculty of Science from 2nd – 7th of October 2017 under the theme of ‘Big Bang to Artificial Intelligence’ to coincide with its golden jubilee celebrations.

The inauguration ceremony of the VIDYA-2017 was successfully held on the 2nd of October 2017 at Sri Dharmaloka Convocation Hall of the University of Kelaniya, under the auspices of Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor and Mr. H.M.P.C. Herath, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research. The Faculty of Science of the University of Kelaniya takes immense pleasure in presenting VIDYA-2017 the ultimate educational exhibition in Sri Lanka for scientific knowledge and it is intended on enhancing the leadership, innovation and creativity among undergraduates and uplifting the interest among Sri Lankans on science.

VIDYA-2017 creates a good platform to build a lasting relationship among stakeholders- industry, business sector, schoolchildren (especially the secondary level) and public. Furthermore, VIDYA-2017 intends to function as a stage for the undergraduates to display their industry – oriented and science – oriented innovations. “Digital Dreams 2017, HacKLN 2017, Mathematics in Nature 2017, Atrix Explosion 2017, Extreme Fusion 2017, Astor Night Camp 2017, and ESL-2017” are some of the examples for the industry – oriented and science – oriented innovations of the undergraduates.

Present at this occasion were Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. B.M. Jayawardena, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Cadre Chair & Senior Prof. N.P. Sunil Chandra, the Chairman of the Research Council, Prof. Ariyarathna Jayamaha ,the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. P.N.D. Fernando, the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Prof A.H.M.H. Abayarathne, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Ven. Dr. Dodamkumbure Dhammadassi Thero, the Chief Student Counsellor, W.M. Karunaratne, the Registrar, including the former Deans of the Faculty of Science, the academic staff members of the Faculty of Science, non-academic staff members and many undergraduates.

A presentation and discussion on the #SkillsUpSriLanka mass media campaign

The Coordinating Centre for Students with Disabilities (CCSD) together with the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Kelaniya and in collaboration with World University Service Canada (WUSC) organized an event to introduce ‘#SkillUpSriLanka’, a mass media campaign launched by WUSC. This ongoing mass media campaign addresses the persistent concerns over the scarcity of skilled labour in Sri Lanka. Ms. Judy Deepan and Ms. Esther McIntosh of WUSC made a presentation on the campaign followed by a discussion on the representation of gender and disability within the campaign advertisements. The event was held on the 28th of September 2017 at the Department of English Language Teaching. This event was attended by Esther McIntosh, Judy Deepan, Puvaneswary Ponniah, Sanjeewa Sudesh, Lakshya Dhungana, Mangala Rajapakse and H. Manage of WUSC, Shyamani Hettiarachchi of CCSD and a group of first and second year undergraduate students.

“KARUNA”- Launch of the Felicitation Volume in Honour of late Emeritus Professor (Retired Senior & Chair Professor) W.S. Karunathilaka

The Launch of the Felicitation Volume in Honour of late Emeritus Professor (Retired Senior & Chair Professor) W.S. Karunathilaka was successfully held on the 28th of September 2017 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Kelaniya under the patronage of the most Venerable Welamitiyawe Dharmakirthi Sri Kusala Dhamma Thero, the Chief Prelate of the Colombo and Chilaw regions and the Chancellor of University. This felicitation volume was published by Maradana S. Godage & Brothers Pvt. Ltd.

This event was graced by the Venerable Maha Sangha led by Most Ven. Ittapane Dhammalankara Thera, Mahanayaka of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Mahasangha Sabha of Siyam Nikaya, Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ven. Dr. Dodamkumbure Dhammadassi Thero, the Chief Student Counsellor, Mr. L.A. Jayatissa, the Librarian, the Department Heads of the Faculty of Humanities and the academic staff members, Dr. Kalyani Karunathilaka – beloved wife of late Emeritus Professor W.S. Karunathilaka, Deshabandu S. Godage of Maradana S. Godage & Brothers Pvt. Ltd including other distinguished guests and many undergraduates.

The Felicitation volume of late Emeritus Professor (Retired Senior & Chair Professor) W.S. Karunathilaka who was a distinguished teacher, mature educationist, phonetician, and erudite scholar, was edited by a board of editors including Emeritus Senior Prof. R.M. Rajapakshe, Prof. J.S. Wijesekara, Senior Lecturer Sudath Senerath, Senior Lecturer Kumudu Nayani Gamage and Lecturer Vindhya Weerawardhane.

The event was organized by the academic staff members including Emeritus Senior Prof. R.M. Rajapakshe, the students, friends and the relatives of late Emeritus Professor (Retired Senior & Chair Professor) W.S. Karunathilaka.

Concurrently, the late Emeritus Professor (Retired Senior & Chair Professor) W.S Karunathilaka Scholarship programme founded by the former Senior Lecturer Ven. Thapowanaye Suthadhara Thero of the Department of Linguistics was awarded to D.B. Pavani De Silva, an undergraduate of the University of Kelaniya bearing the student number HS/2013/0136 by Dr. Kalyani Karunathilaka, the beloved wife of the late Emeritus Professor W.S. Karunathilaka.

“Oba Asirimath” – Three-day workshop

“Oba Asirimath” – three day workshop organized by the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Department of Manpower and Employment of Gampaha District Secretariat on behalf of undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya was successfully held on the 26th, 27th and 28th of September 2017 at the Carrier Guidance Unit of the University of Kelaniya.

The objective of this workshop was to urge the undergraduates to get their qualifications globally recognized, to minimize unemployment and to contribute to the social and economic development of the country.

Prof. Chamaru de Alwis, the Director of the Career Guidance Unit, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. This programme was conducted by the officers of the Department of Manpower and Employment of Gampaha District Secretariat. Forty students representing the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences took part in this workshop.
The certificates were presented to the undergraduates who participated in this workshop by Mr. G.D. Anura Piyabandu, Gampaha Additional District Secretary of Gampaha District Secretariat, Mr. Thilak Senarath, Director (Employment Creation, Promotion and Professional Guidance) of the Department of Manpower and Employment, Prof. Chamaru de Alwis, the Director of the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Kelaniya.
