The Vice-Chancellor and the delegates visit the Chongqing Normal University, China

The delegates from the University of Kelaniya including Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor officially visited the Chongqing Normal University, China on the 14th -18th of September 2017 to extend the contract for the annual exchange of lecturers and students between the University of Kelaniya and the Chongqing Normal University via the Confucius Institute.

This agreement was signed between Prof. Zhou Ze Yang, the Vice Chancellor, on behalf of the Chongqing Normal University, China and Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the University of Kelaniya ,Sri Lanka. In addition, a MoU was also signed to construct a separate building to maintain the Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya.

Thereafter, the delegates from the University of Kelaniya including Prof. D.M. Semasinghe addressed the students who are currently studying in the Chongqing Normal University. At present, 101 students have won scholarships under the guidance of the Confucius Institute, the University of Kelaniya to study in the Chongqing Normal University and they study different courses. The delegates also visited the Department of Mass Communication of the Chongqing Normal University.

Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lakshman Seneviratne, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa, the Director of the Communication & Media Unit, Dr. J.A. Kumari Priyanka Jayasurooya Menike, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute & Senior Lecturer of the Department of Modern Languages and Ms. T.M. Inoka Damayanthi Tennakoon, the Bursar.

A Tree Planting programme at the Faculty of Science

A Tree Planting programme to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Faculty of Science was held on the 20th of September 2017 at the Faculty of Science premises, the University of Kelaniya. Another objective of this programme was to safeguard the balance of the environment under the Green University Concept and to create a calm environment suitable for students.

 

The Tree Planting programme was held with the patronage of Prof. Bimali Jayawardena, the Dean of the Faculty of Science and with the help of the officers of the Center for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) and Landscaping Division. Dr. U. P. K. Epa, the Director of the CSS, other academic staff members of the Faculty of Science and the undergraduates were also present at this programme.

A scholarly discussion on the ‘Uma oya Project’

A scholarly discussion on the ‘Uma Oya Project’ organized by the Department of Geography was successfully held on 18th of September 2017, at the auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, with the objective of educating the undergraduates whether the Uma Oya Project was a multipurpose project or a multifaceted project.

The 94th General Convocation of the University of Kelaniya

The 94th General Convocation of the University of Kelaniya was successfully held on the 19th of September 2017 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).

The graduands of the following Degree Programmes were awarded certificates during the First Session; Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies – Doctor of Philosophy Degree, Master of Philosophy Degree, Master of Arts Degree, Master of Arts Degree (External), Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies, Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Ayurvedic Counselling, Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies (External). The graduands (External Candidates) of the Faculty of Social Sciences – Bachelor of Arts Degree Programme were also awarded certificates.

The convocation was presided over by Thripitaka Vagishvaracharya, Mahopadhyaya, Pandith, the most Venerable Welamitiyawe Dharmakirthi Sri Kusala Dhamma Thero, – the Chief Prelate of the Colombo and Chilaw regions and the Chancellor of University of Kelaniya. Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Deans of the Faculties, Directors of Postgraduate Institutes, Registrar, Directors of the Institutes, Heads of the Departments, the academic staff members of the university and parents were among the participants of this special ceremony in which about 900 graduates were awarded certificates.
