The Floriculture Research Center of Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya located at the Henarathgoda Botanical Gardens is a leading Sri Lankan institution for Tissue Cultured Floriculture.

The “Plant Tissue Culture” is a collection of techniques used to maintain or grow plant cells, tissues or organs under sterile conditions on a nutrient culture medium of known composition. The ex-plants from selected mother plant are established and multiplied under ‘In-Vitro’ conditions, providing the optimum pre-requisite for plant growth. These ex-plants go through the initiation, multiplication and rooting methods for producing a cell into a full-fledged plant. These ready plantlets are then hardened in climatically controlled green houses or poly houses.

Currently, Orchid, Gerbera and Chrysanthemum are the main plants use in tissue culture propagation at the center. This research institute conducts a three-month training programme for floriculturists in the Gampaha District, which provides knowledge and practical training on nursery management and tissue culture. This has enabled the country’s unemployed youth to strengthen their economy through floriculture. In the future, this service will be island-wide.

Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. LakshmanSeneviratne, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Priyanganie Senanayake, Head Department of Botany, Dr Rasika Wanigatunge Senior Lecturer, Department of Botany, University of Kelaniya and, Ms. D.B.R.
