Offering Postgraduate Degree Programs of UoK in Bangladesh

The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) has taken the initiative to provide postgraduate degree programmes of the University of Kelaniya (UoK) in Bangladesh through an exclusive corporate partner namely Cambrian Int’l Study Centre (CISC). The CISC is a part of the BSB-Cambrian Education Group, one of the leading private education providers in Bangladesh.

Based on the MoU signed between the two institutions earlier, an agreement was signed by Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya and Mr. Ln M K Bashar PMJF, the Chairman of CISC on the 11th of September 2017 in order to strengthen the academic activities. This agreement allows CISC to represent UoK as the exclusive corporate partner in Bangladesh for the purpose of promoting and recruiting students and conducting the postgraduate programmes, offered by Faculty of Graduate Studies, in the UoK in Sri Lanka. Further, UoK provides all curriculums, teaching materials, evaluation procedure of the degree programmes which are conducted in Bangladesh. Finally, the degree and the certificate will be offered from UoK to the students of CISC upon successfully completion of the programme.

Initially, CISC and UoK agreed to conduct three postgraduate degree programmes namely, Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Business in Accounting and Finance (MBuS in Accounting and Finance) and Master of Business Management in Marketing (MBM) in CISC for Bangladeshi students. The FGS and program coordinators shall coordinate with CISC in Bangladesh to offer the programs and shall commence the programmes in October 2017. The objectives of this initiative are to increase international students pursuing demand driven programs of UoK using offshore sites, to help promote Sri Lanka as an international destination for higher education in South Asia and to help improving the rankings of UoK.

Rafsun Juny, the Chief Coordinator of CISC, several journalists of Bangladesh, Prof. J.M.D. Ariyarathne, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Dr. P.N.D Fernando, the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS), Registrar, Librarian, Director / International Student Affairs Unit, all the Heads of the Departments attached to the FCMS, the Postgraduate programme Coordinators and Administrative Officers and non-academic staff of FGS graced this memorable and important occasion.

Mr. Aruna Lokuliyana wins “Best Layout & Interior Design” award at State Literary Awards 2017

The 60th State Literary Awards Ceremony organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs was held on the 8th September 2017 at the Nelum Pokuna (Lotus Pond) – Mahinda Rajapakse Theatre with the participation of His Excellency the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Mithripala Sirisena.
The award winner for the “Best Layout & Interior Design in 2017” was the Senior Lecturer, Aruna Lokuliyana, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya. The award was received by him for the Best Layout & Interior Design created on behalf of the felicitation volume named “Samprasādana” for Prof. K.M.P. Kulasekara of the Department of History, University of Kelaniya.
In addition, Senior Lecturer Aruna Lokuliyana was awarded for the “Best Cover Design” at the State Literary Awards Ceremony held earlier in 2000 on behalf of the cover design created for the “Jana Kiyaman Potha”- a Glossary of Folklore authored by Emeratus Prof. Sunanda Mahendra.
Furthermore, “Sabaragamuwa Gami Nataka”- a book authored by Mr. Mangala Keerthi De Pasqual, Media Coordinator of the Communication and Media Unit of the University of Kelaniya was nominated for the “Academic and Research publication of the year 2017”

HR IMPRESSION - 2017

“HR IMPRESSION 2017”- a comprehensive, developmental Career Guidance programme designed to assist the students who faced the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination in 2017 was successfully held on the 8th of September 2017 at the Sunil Shantha Memorial Auditorium of the University of Kelaniya.

The purpose of this programme was to develop the competencies in self-knowledge, educational and occupational exploration, and career planning of the students. This career guidance programme also helped the students to acquire the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to identify options, explore alternatives and succeed in society.

This programme was participated by Dr. Narada Fernando, the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies (FCMS), Dr. D.U. Mohan, the Head of Department of Human Resource Management (HRM), Dr. Anura Karunarathne, the Head of the Department of Accountancy,  Dr. Chamaru de Alwis, the Director of the Career Guidance Unit, Dr. Kamal Thilakasiri, Chief Student Counsellor of the FCMS, Mr. K.K.V.L.W. Karunathilake, the Deputy General Manager (Marketing) - National Savings Bank, Mr. Heshan Karunarathne, General Manager of Easy Corporation, Ms. Sandhya Fernando, Regional Manager - National Savings Bank, Mr. Dennis Olaboduwa, Kiribathgoda Branch Manager -National Savings Bank, Mr. M.T.A.J.F. Gomes, General Manager (operational) - National Savings Bank, the academic staff members of the Department of HRM, Students who sat for  the G.C.E. A/L examination in 2017, the members of the AHEAD Students’ Association of the Department of HRM and many undergraduates.

Two-Day Guest Workshop on “Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning”

Two-Day Guest Workshop on “Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning” organized by the Department of Industrial Management at the University of Kelaniya was successfully held on the 6th and 7th of September 2017 at the Department of Industrial Management of the Faculty of Science at the University of Kelaniya. This workshop was held with the intention of introducing machine learning, image processing and deep learning techniques as well as giving the opportunity to get hands on experience on software such as TensorFlow and Python.
This workshop which was targeted at professionals in the private sector and universities was conducted by Dr. Chamidu Atupelage, PhD (TokyoTech), MEng (Hiroshima), BSc (UCSC), a researcher at the RIKEN Institute, Japan. The workshop was participated by academic staff members of the Department of Industrial Management including Dr. Chathura Rajapakshe, Dr. Suren Peter, Dr. Dilani Wickramarachchi, Dr. Shantha Jayalal, professionals of the other universities and industrial professionals.
