Prof. Mumin Chen of the National Chung-Hsing University of Taiwan meets the Vice-chancellor

A meeting between Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya and Prof. Mumin Chen, the Chairman of the Graduate Institute of International Politics of the National Chung-Hsing University, Taiwan took place on the 4th of August at the Vice Chancellor’s Office. The enhancement of the collaborative educational activities between the National Chung-Hsing University of Taiwan and the University of Kelaniya was the main purpose of the meeting.

Accordingly, a discussion was held to explore the possibility of exchange of students for Bachelor’s degree programmes and Postgraduate programmes with the objective of sharing the experiences and commencing joint research projects, which will pave the way to sign a MoU between the two Universities in due course. Specially, the attention was drawn to the subjects of the Faculty of Computing & Technology, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Commerce & Management of the both universities.

Prof. M.J.S. Wijerathne, the Former Vice Chancellor, Dr. Mangala Ganehiarachchi, Senior Prof. U.S. Amarasinghe of the Department of Zoology & Environmental Management of the Faculty of Science and Sandeli Priyanwada Kasthuri Arachchi, a postgraduate student of the National Central University of Taiwan were present at the event.

Awareness Workshop on “Environmental Conservation & Sustainability”

An awareness workshop on “Environmental Conservation & Sustainability” and a Q & A session organized by the Centre for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) of the University of Kelaniya was successfully held on the 3rd of August 2017 at Kotahena Sri Pragnakeerthi Memorial Hall.

The objective of the workshop was to give an awareness to the schoolchildren of Imbulgoda Rajasinghe Maha Vidyalaya, Gampaha on the “Green Concept” and “Environmental Conservation & Sustainability”. While delivering a speech at the workshop, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya stated that everyone should be committed to protect the Environment as it is a duty of everyone. The keynote speech on “Young Leaders for Sustainable Sri Lanka” was delivered by Dr.U.P.K. Epa, the Director of the CSS of the University of Kelaniya. After delivering the speeches, Question-and-Answer (Q&A) session was conducted by Ms. Asanka Dilini, the Project Associate to evaluate the schoolchildren’s awareness on Environmental issues in Sri Lanka.

Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Dr.U.P.K.Epa, the Director of CSS, the members of the Green Practices Committee (GPC), officers of the Linea Intimo of MAS Active (Pvt) Ltd, schoolteachers and the schoolchildren of Imbulgoda Rajasinghe Maha Vidyalaya participated in this workshop. UoK’s most avid readers in 2016 receive awards

An award ceremony for the avid readers who borrowed the highest number of books from the main library of the University of Kelaniya in 2016 was held on the 2nd of August at the Library Auditorium under the patronage of the Vice-chancellor. Accordingly, P.N.T. Kamalaweera (HU/2011/402), W.G.S. Lakmali (HS/2013/486) of the Department of Sinhala of the Faculty of Humanities and U.N.N.C. Navarathna of the Department of History of the Faculty of Social Sciences received awards.

Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor while appreciating the book readers at the event, stated that the good students like these do a valuable contribution to the society with their knowledge and experience. Moreover, he stated that these three undergraduates would be given free lifetime library membership. The undergraduates who received the awards stated that they had the lowest library facilities during their school days. Furthermore, they stated that they had a great opportunity to read various kinds of books with the entrance to the university.

A meeting with the Vice Chancellor

Prof. Durga Prasad Singh, appointed Visiting Professor in Hindi for 2 years by the Indian government (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) for the Department of Hindi of the University of Kelaniya met Prof. D.M Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor on the 2nd of August 2017 at the Vice Chancellor’s Office. Prof. Durga Prasad Singh is a professor of the J.N.V. University, Rajasthan, India.

It is hoped that this will provide a good opportunity to enhance the diplomatic relations between the two countries and to exchange experiences. The discussions were held on the measures taken to improve the coexistence between India and Sri Lanka’s educational systems and to improve the Hindi language in Sri Lanka.

This event was attended by Prof. D.M Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. Durga Prasad Singh, Visiting Professor in Hindi and Senior Prof. Upul Ranjith Hewavithanagamage of the Department of Hindi.
